nano hydroxyapatite in dentistry
Products and Technology

More Bone. Faster.

HAnano Surface® combines several properties that are known to improve osseointegration into one unique surface modification. The combination of high wettability and optimal surface chemistry, with optimized nano-roughness, mediates bioactivity and specific protein adsorption to the implant. These properties regulate cell behavior and influence tissue regeneration by increasing the osteoblast functions, thus building more bone faster.

Adding a New Dimension to Osseointegration

Compared to traditional coatings, where bone anchors to the coating, HAnano Surface does not act as an interface separating bone from the implant. The nano-thin surface enables newly formed bone to grow directly into the micrometer topography, or roughness, of the implant surface, thus providing mechanical stability. With the particle-based HAnano Surface, there is no risk of cracking or delamination of the implant. Modification of an implant with HAnano Surface does not change the dimensions of the implant so there is no need to alter instruments or techniques.

Other applications

The HAnano Surface technology is versatile and can be used in many different applications. The surface modification can be used to increase hydrophilicity or bone cell activity on any material that can withstand a short heat treatment.

HAnano Surface technology has been successfully integrated into biosensors in lab analysis equipment that is central to research and development of pharmaceuticals and dental care products.

Promimic has also developed nano-sized crystalline powder or suspension hydroxyapatite (non-sterile, not approved for use in humans), with a specific surface are of 180 m2/g. This form of hydroxyapatite can be used in R&D, as an ingredient in bone substitutes or as a chromatography material.

Technology and Process

Modification of an implant with HAnano Surface is achieved through a wet chemical process. Only off-the-shelf equipment is required and can easily be integrated into existing implant manufacturing lines. For OEMs without in-house manufacturing capabilities, Promimic has established a strategic partnership with Danco, a leading supplier of surface treatments to the medical device industry. Danco has a fully validated and operational HAnano Surface production line in their facility in Warsaw, Indiana (U.S.), which is now offered to customers of Promimic.

    1. Application of Coating Liquid

In the first step, the coating liquid is applied to the implant either via spraying, drop wise addition or simply by dipping.

    2. Thin Film Formation

In the second step, excess coating liquid is removed forming a thin film.

    3. Heat Treatment

The final step involves a short heat treatment at temperatures significantly lower than traditional coatings, resulting in a nano-thin HAnano Surface covering the entire implant surface.
